There is a national park for you, and I want to help you find it.

Hello! I’m Michelle, and I’m on a mission to see all 63 U.S. national parks. I’m so humbled to have you here; thank you for visiting, and let me show you around! I officially committed to this goal in 2018 after my 14th park. With 44 parks under my belt and a handful of park sites, I share recaps of my visits and travel tips based on firsthand experience. My hope is that reading about real experiences will help you create a clearer vision for your own travels. And you might find some nuggets here that aren’t on the park service website!

It hasn’t all been sunshine and roses, though...just a few years ago in 2017, I found myself wishing I went outside more. I was living that post-breakup life, feeling sorry for myself that I didn’t have a built-in adventure partner. That summer, I had a breakthrough that changed everything:

I taught myself to go outside alone.

I started small, with trips to local trails that I had hiked before. That fall, I went on my first-ever solo trip--a two night camping trip to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I was scared and told my sister where I was going instead of my parents, because I didn’t want them to try to stop me.

Since then, my love of outdoor travel has snowballed into a full-blown obsession with national parks.

I grew up in the Atlanta suburbs and consider myself an Atlantian even though I have never, not once, ever lived within Atlanta city limits (and I never want to). If you’re from the ‘burbs, you get it. Having midwestern parents, I was raised with a healthy appreciation for long car trips. My parents didn’t realize it then, but they were grooming me for a life of adventure as an adult--thanks, Mom and Dad!

I did a short stint in art school before finding myself at my current job as a 911 dispatcher. This is the condensed version of that portion of my life, because those were my lost years. My job at 911 saved me from a string of minimum wage jobs that were leading nowhere, and has given me the flexibility to discover my true love--national parks.

In 2021, I went all-in and joined the National Park Service professionally. My now husband Tyler and I made the move from Georgia to the Grand Canyon South Rim, and have since continued our park service path to the foothills of the ever-iconic Yosemite National Park.

I believe that Black Lives Matter. As a white woman, what I have written is limited to my white perspective. While I strongly believe that the outdoors are for everyone, I have only just begun learning (and unlearning) about the systems of oppression that cause my favorite places to be unwelcoming to all. I am committed to doing my part to help make the outdoors a safer place for all who choose to enjoy it, and hope that Head Along with Heart can be a resource for anyone who wants to visit our parks.

I feel more fulfilled in the outdoors, and especially in my beloved parks, than any other time. I hope that Head Along with Heart helps you discover a national park that you had never heard of, or plan a vacation to a park that’s been on your mind! Truly, there’s not a better time to get outside than right now.
